LumixUV Technology.
UVC light energy has been scientifically proven for germicidal use, meaning this type of light effectively kills viruses, bacteria, mold, allergens, and other airborne pathogens. LumixUV has developed a unique and new form of UVC light energy disinfection technology. This technology allows us to disinfect air, and in the future - surfaces, at a level comparable to alcohol or other medical-grade sanitizers.
UVC Background.
LumixUV’s UVC light energy disinfection technology is unique from anything currently available to consumers. UVC light has been utilized in various products such as air purifiers, surface sanitizers, and other devices for several years, however, all of these products have been utilizing mercury vapor lamps as the source of this UVC light.
Lamps vs. LEDs.
UVC LEDs offer several major advantages over UVC lamps:
-
Wavelength - UVC lamps operate at a wavelength of 253 nanometers, whereas UVC LEDs operate at 270 nanometers, which is much closer to the CDC recommended optimal germicidal wavelength of 265 nanometers.
-
Disposal - Mercury-vapor UVC lamps need to be replaced every few months, and thus the old burnt-out lamps discarded. Many states have now banned the disposal of mercury containing products due to its extremely hazardous effects on the environment. UVC LEDs will operate continuously for several years before degrading and also do not contain the dangerous element mercury.
-
Ozone - Another side-effect of mercury-vapor UVC lamps is that they produce ozone due to their additional radiation at 185 nanometers. Ozone can cause severe lung irritation when inhaled. UVC LEDs do not produce ozone.
